Leadership Training

At the Dartmoor Centres we provide a range of Outdoor Leadership qualifications.  As well as providing first aid courses for outdoor practitioners we also provide training and assessment for the South West Mountain & Moorland Leader Training Scheme (SWMML) on behalf of Devon County Council and also the MLTE Walking Group Leader Scheme.

SWMMLTS (South West Mountain and Moorland leader training scheme)

SWMMLT strictly requires that all candidates are registered on the scheme before commencing their courses. This is a one-off fee of £30 + VAT and is in addition to the course fees. Once registered a unique membership number will be sent to you along with a logbook and handbook. Registration forms can be obtained by emailing us or telephone 01364 631500

Coastal & Countryside Leadership Training & Assessment (including camping endorsement)

This weekend course (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) is for those wishing to lead groups in rural countryside and coastal areas in South West England and South Wales in Summer conditions.  The weekend course includes training and assessment. Suited to those leading Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.

Summer Moorland Walking Leader Training (SWMML)

This weekend course (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) is for those wishing to lead groups in moorland terrain in South West England and South Wales in Summer conditions. Suited to those leading Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and for Ten Tors leaders.

Summer Moorland Walking Leader Assessment (SWMML)

This 1 day assessment is for those who have completed Summer Moorland Walking Leader Training (or WGL training or ML training but have not been assessed).

Summer Moorland Camping Leader Training & Assessment (SWMML)

This weekend course (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) is for those wishing to lead groups ‘Wild Camping’ in moorland terrain in South West England and South Wales in Summer conditions.  The course includes training and assessment.  Candidates need to have previously passed the Summer Moorland Walking Leader assessment or passed WGL assessment. Suited to those leading Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and for Ten Tors leaders.

Winter Moorland Walking Leader Training (SWMML)

This weekend course (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) is for those wishing to lead groups in moorland terrain in South West England and South Wales in Winter conditions.  Suited to those leading Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and for Ten Tors leaders.

Mountain Leader Training (MLT)

Mountain training strictly requires that all candidates are registered on the scheme before commencing the course. They will not recognise completion of the course by non-registered participants. Copies of the syllabus and details of how to register are available from Mountain Training.

Hill and Moorland Leader Training

This course is fully residential with all meals and overnight accomodation. We aim to cover the whole syllabus and set candidates on the right track for a successful assessment. Three mainly practical days are spent on the moors.

Mountain Training strictly requires that all students are registered on the scheme before commencing the course. They will not recognise completion of the course by non-registered participants. Copies of the syllabus and details of how to register are available from Mountain Training. Ensure your DLOG (online logbook) is fully completed with your experience. You will benefit most from the course if you are fit and have some experience of using a map and compass in a moorland environment.


Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment

This course is fully residential with all meals and overnight accomodation. You must have completed a Hill and Moorland Leader training or WGL prior to this assessment, the course covers the syllabus of the award meeting the standards set by Mountain Training. Three mainly practical days are spent on the local moors.

 

Moorland Camping Leader Training/Assessment

This course will run from Friday evening to Sunday at 17:00 (approx). This is a weekend training course which may incorporate an assessment within the weekend, provided you have appropriate previous experience.

There are two options:

  • To use the weekend as a training course only or
  • To complete both training and assessment within the weekend, subject to prior experience.

Summer Moorland Walking Leader Assessment

Successful completion of assessment enables approval to be given by operating authorities for the leadership of moorland day walks in summer conditions. The following syllabus content needs to be completed over a minimum of a 21 hour training course and builds on the syllabus content of the coastal and countryside award.

First Aid Courses

Emergency First Aid for the Outdoors (16hrs)

This two-day course covers the practical application of first aid in an outdoor environment. It is particularly suitable for leaders of groups such as teachers or youth leaders who are likely to find themselves in outdoor or remote locations This two-day course covers the practical application of first aid in an outdoor environment. A two day or 16 hour syllabus is the benchmark requirement for most National Governing Body Awards such as Mountain leader, BCU coach, RYA Instructor, Forest School Leader etc.

First Aid at Work (2 day refresher)

This two-day course is a refresher for those people who have previously attended a full 4 day Health & Safety at Work course. Successful completion of this course revalidates your HSE status for 3 years. The course syllabus covers the practical application of first aid with a particular emphasis on first aid in an outdoor environment. It is particularly suitable for leaders of groups such as Teachers or Youth Leaders who are likely to find themselves in outdoor or remote locations. 

The practical nature of the course allows plenty of time to practice hands on and thereby develop a greater level of confidence in skills newly learnt.
We place a strong emphasis on a realistic approach to first aid.
