School Visits

School visits and festivals

I frequently do school visits for both primary and secondary schools and also give talks and run workshops at festivals.

“It was a real pleasure having Sandra in to talk with our Year 7 students. The creative writing workshop Sandra led was fantastic and really fired the imagination…” Teacher, King Edward VI Community College

“The creative writing workshops were highly engaging and helped students build their confidence; they learnt that, rather than arriving fully formed, ideas have to be developed through practice, experimentation and play.” Teacher, Kingsbridge Community College

“The children loved your visit and were so inspired. So was I. It was wonderful to see their creativity and hear their outpourings. They wrote so well in such a short time.” Teacher, Exeter Cathedral School

A typical school visit Main talk (years 5/6 or years 7/8): This covers how I started writing and what inspires me. It’s energetic and highly visual, lasting around an hour, including time for questions. I’m very happy talking to big audiences.

Creative writing workshops (year 6 or years 7/8): These generally last an hour and are suitable for smaller groups – from 10 to 30 students. I often run workshops on writing spooky stories (with some interesting props), which are great for both boys and girls. I can also tailor creative writing workshops for specific requirements.

Most school visits include a main talk and one or more creative writing workshops, plus a book signing session.

For local schools (within an hour and a half’s travel from Totnes) I charge a reduced rate:

  • Whole day (up to 4 sessions plus a book signing): £275 plus VAT
  • Morning (up to two sessions plus a book signing): £200 plus VAT

Plus travel expenses

If your school is further afield, please get in touch with me about costs – these will depend on travel and whether I need to stay overnight.
