School Library Conference
Thursday 26 November 2020 | Sandy Park, Exeter | 09:00 - 15:45
Following the success of the Secondary Library Conferences, this year we are expanding the event and will be providing content and inspriation for both Primary and Secondary settings.
In our increasingly visual world the skill of analysing and interpreting images is even more essential for children and young people.
Together during this conference, we will look at how the use of illustration can engage readers and help to develop deep comprehension skills including inference, irony and unspoken emotion in an accessible and more inclusive way.
You will also be provided with the knowledge of the unique approach and literary significance of alternative forms of storytelling and their place in children’s literature.
Through a range of high quality keynotes and workshops, this conference will explore how to select and promote the use of various forms of multimodal texts including picture books, graphic novels, manga, non-fiction and poetry to provide a ‘rich, reading curriculum’ across all key stages.
We are very excited to announce that our keynote speakers for this year will be Bestselling Author and Illustrator, Cressida Cowell and Karl Duke, Headteacher at Blyton cum Laughton CE Primary School.

About Karl Duke
Karl is the headteacher of a small school in Lincolnshire. Since his appointment four years ago he has worked with his team to develop a reading-inspired curriculum to ensure children are exposed to quality picture books and novels throughout their journey in primary school.
He previously enjoyed a range of leadership roles in schools around the county including subject leadership and assistant headship. For a number of years he worked as a Literacy Consultant supporting headteachers, middle leaders and teachers delivering national and regional strategies (including Talk for Writing and Visual Literacy) as well as developing his own materials for use in the classroom, many of them with a creative link to books and film.
Karl is active on Twitter (@KarlDuke8) and is the developer of #PictureBookCurriculum #DetailDetectives (@DetailDetects1), #Illustration2Creation as well as being one of the four curators of @ClubPictureBook. Last year, his school was chosen to host the #ReadingRocks_PopUp after being recognised for its approach to celebrating reading and has spoken about the school’s journey at Reading Rocks Live and the One Education Literacy Conference.
Creativity has always been a significant driver and inspiration in Karl’s career and he is never happier than being in the classroom exploring picture books with children.

A very informative day. Lots to think about and new ideas and initiatives that can hopefully be put into action. One of the best SLS conferences I've attended. Thank you!
