Clerks' Update

Clerks’ Update  (held annually in the summer term)

We offer separate updates for maintained school clerks and academy clerks, (whether clerking for the trust board or a local governing body/ local school committee). The importance of the role of the clerk has been acknowledged by the DfE, with the Governance Handbook and Competency Frameworks referring to the clerk as the ‘governance professional’. This morning session will support your continuing professional development as a clerk.

These annual events in the summer term offer an opportunity for clerks to come together and consider the latest national and local news and initiatives which will impact on their work with the board. There will be time for questions and for networking. Clerks are increasingly relied upon by their board to provide advice and guidance both during and between meetings; these sessions are an opportunity to build your knowledge and understanding of current governance issues. Lunch is provided so please stay and take the opportunity to network with other clerks.

Ofsted - the New Framework for Governors, Trustees and Directors

This session is offered in partnership with the Devon Association of Governance (DAG) and the Diocese of Exeter as an opportunity to update all governors, trustees and directors with regard to their Ofsted responsibilities.

We know that Ofsted have introduced a new framework from September 2019 with a renewed focus on the ‘substance of education and a broad curriculum’. The changes have moved Ofsted’s focus away from headline data to look instead at how schools are achieving their results, and whether they are offering a curriculum that is broad, rich and deep, or simply teaching to the test.

Karl Sampson, a Senior HMI with Ofsted and the Assistant Regional Director in Ofsted’s south west regional management team will deliver this session and answer questions from participants. This is your opportunity to learn more about the Ofsted regime and have your concerns addressed and your questions answered.

This course is designed for new governors or trustees who have not yet completed their school’s group 2 safeguarding training. Clerks may also find this training useful and are welcome to attend. It will discuss the relevant child protection information and provide certification. It has been designed to help you understand the statutory requirements of safeguarding and ensure that you and your school/setting meet the Ofsted and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018 requirements. This course is only suitable for governors/trustees with responsibility for championing safeguarding and aims to assist them in recognising the role they play in the safeguarding of children and young people. The Board - Leading and Owning School Leadership

A half-day (or evening) session for individual boards to explore how they take the lead on drawing together key information and context in order to deliver the best outcomes for children and young people.

This face-to-face session will explore how the strategic plan is developed, delivered, monitored and evaluated, with time for governors or trustees to reflect on current practice identify barriers and consider next steps. This session is equally appropriate for stand-alone schools and those working together within a federation or multi-academy trust.

The Professional Clerk

The Professional Clerk

Full cost £400, Department for Education (DfE) funding of £350.00, cost to the school £50.00

This course is linked to the Clerking Competency Framework and involves two face-to-face sessions supported by online activities and peer mentoring. The school will need to pay a one-off cost of £50.00 up front, the additional costs will be met in full by the DfE; delegates must attend both face-to-face units to qualify for the funding. If you’re a clerk with several months’ experience or more, this course will help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge to carry out your role confidently and effectively.

  • Improve how you work and the quality of governance at your school
  • Study alongside other clerks and support each other during and after the training
  • Provide valuable evidence for Ofsted of the competence of your governing board
  • Understanding governance - for clarity about the duties and responsibilities of the board and relevant legislation and procedures
